(Belmont, MA) For the last few months every Tuesday night at 6:00 PM the Winn Brook School gym has been the location of Quickball. This is a fast pace type of baseball that is designed to be youth friendly and interactive. The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office secured grants of equipment and money from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and in conjunction with the Belmont Police Department, ran the program which is called Badges for Baseball. other communities in Middlesex County also participated in the program. Between 10 and 25 Belmont youth showed up each Tuesday night to play.  The final playoffs were held on Saturday May 3rd at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Academy in Billerica which included a cookout and awards for the kids. The officers from each community that ran the program were asked to select one youth who showed sportsmanship, teamwork, regular attendance, and a positive attitude. This youth was presented with a plaque, and will attend the Cal Ripken Sr. Baseball Camp in Maryland for a week this summer. The selection was difficult since so many great kids played each week, but officers finally selected Katrina Rizzuto. The police department will run Quickball again next winter so watch for the announcement.
