(Belmont, MA)This past Saturday the Belmont Auxiliary Police again sponsored and ran their annual Family Safety Day, (formally Child Safety Day), at the Belmont High School. The primary attraction of the event was the MYChip Program run by the Masons.  At the end of the day 121 children of all ages were fingerprinted, videotaped and had a dental DNA impression taken, with all the items given to the parents for safe keeping. There were also displays in the cafeteria from a variety of departments in town such as the Police, D.A.R.E., Fire Dept., 911 Communications, Health Dept & Animal Control, and C.E.R.T.  In the parking lot there were vehicles and personnel from the Belmont Police Dept. and the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office including their Mobile Command Center. The Days Inn race car and team also came for the day.  There were displays on personal safety including the popular Operation Lifesaver display and video on safety at railroad crossings. There were lots of free handouts including pamphlets with all kinds of information, tee shirts, coffee mugs, bike helmets, gun locks, and more. This all happened as the mascot for the event, Buckle-Up Bear,  made the rounds keeping the kids entertained. The Auxiliary Police have run this event every spring for many years and advertise it for several weeks beforehand.
