US Census Workers May Visit Homes

BELMONT, MA - The U.S. Census Bureau is currently sending a short questionnaire to every household in the United States. You are required to respond. Those people that haven’t completed their census and returned it should expect a visit from a census worker starting in April.
Identity criminals may take advantage of the census law and target unsuspecting victims in an attempt to steal sensitive information. These scams range from fraudulent e mails to attempting to impersonate census collectors. It is important to remember there are distinct differences between real census workers and an identity thief posing as a census worker.
- Census workers will have identification, a hand held device, and a confidentially notice. Some may carry a bag that says “US Census Worker”.
- They will not ask for your Social Security number or financial information such as bank account numbers or credit card information.
- They will not ask for money or say you owe money.
- They will not harass on intimidate you.
- They will not contact you by e mail – only by telephone, mail, or in person.
In the event you are concerned about the identity of a census worker you may call the Regional Census Center at 617-424-4500 to confirm their identification or call the Belmont Police at 617-993-2501.
