Local Banks Donate Defibrillators
In a generous example of local businesses giving back to the local community, three Belmont banks recently donated Cardiac Defibrillators to the Belmont Police Department. Belmont Savings Bank, East Cambridge Savings Bank, and Watertown Savings Bank each donated one of the First Save Defibrillators which will soon be in each of the department's cruisers. The compact and portable Cardiac Defibrillators are similar in principle to those used in Hospitals to "shock" a patient having a heart attack. These defibrillators deliver an electrical impulse that restarts the heart in a cardiac arrest victim. Statistics have shown that having cardiac defibrillators more readily available to First Responders, such as police officers, results in lives being saved. When defibrillation is administered within the first few minutes of a heart attack in which the victim goes into cardiac arrest, the survival rate can be as high as 90 percent. With each minute of delay, chances of survival decreases by 10 percent. By having the Cardiac Defibrillators in cruiser's on the street, this lifesaving device will be available quickly to Belmont residents. The Belmont Police Department is grateful to these three local businesses, who have clearly demonstrated their strong commitment to the safety and welfare of the Belmont Community.
