Miscellaneous Information:

  • Do not submit your application fee with the application.   This will be collected when you come in to be fingerprinted and photographed.  Do not submit any photos with your application.
  • Submit the application and any supporting documents at the same time.  The application can be submitted at any time at the lobby window.  Two or three days after submission contact Lt. O'Leary @ 617-993-2553 and make an appointment for fingerprints and photos.
  • When filling out the application pay close attention to question #10 regarding court appearances.  Any and all court appearances, regardless of the finding, or how long ago, must be noted. The only exception is civil motor vehicle appearances.  The Belmont Police conducts a Local, State, and National check in addition to a Dept. of Mental Health check on Gun Permit applicants. Failure to answer this or any other question correctly will result in your permit being delayed or denied.
  • Both new and renewal applications that have been submitted will not be acted on until you have been to the police station to be photographed and fingerprinted.
  • If you move to a new address you must notify the licensing authority.  Fill out a CHANGE OF ADDRESS form and send a copy to the Belmont Police, the police department in your new city or town, and the State Firearms Record Bureau.

If you have firearms questions, or if you would like a free gun lock, please contact Lt. O'Leary at 617-993-2553 or at  boleary@belmontpd.org

We encourage gun owners to go above the requirement that guns have trigger locks and to also secure these guns in lockable containers that are bolted down to help prevent the gun from being removed from the home by an unauthorized person.
