Subject to the direction and control of the Chief of Police, the Lieutenant in charge of Detectives for the Belmont Police Department is responsible for the supervision and guidance for all those Officers and Detectives assigned to his Division.

The Belmont Police Department Detective Division is responsible for the further investigation and prosecution of all felonies, thefts, frauds, burglaries, check cases, aggravated assaults and other such misdemeanors that require extended investigations.

Generally, it is the duty and responsibility of the Detective Division to cooperate fully with other units within the Department and agencies in other jurisdictions, to make investigations for them and to provide criminal records and other information to them. In addition, to aid them in the apprehension of suspects or offenders, and to act as a liaison between this Department and all similar bureau or units in other police departments and law enforcement agencies.

Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, are:

FID and Firearms Laws and licensing Information 

License To Carry Firearms Application

Conduct all Departmental investigations

Assist in locating missing persons

Investigate auto thefts

Investigate controlled substance violations

Act as liaison between Middlesex County Drug Task Force and this Department

Insure evidence is properly transported to, and analyzed by the State Labs in Boston and Sudbury

Photograph and process all crime scenes

Issue licenses and permits

Fingerprint evidence

Fingerprint applicants for various licenses and applications.

Local Registered Sex Offenders

The Detective Division processes licenses, photos, and fingerprints on an appointment only basis.

Fees for services: (effective date December 15, 2003)

Fingerprints $10.00 per card

Non-Residents $15.00 per card

One government issued picture id required, non-citizens 2 forms of id required, one must have a picture.

F.I.D. Cards: Class C $100.00, Class D (pepper spray) $25.00, Class D renewals are no charge

License to Carry Firearms $100.00

It SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT IT TAKES 30-40 DAYS TO PROCESS A FIREARMS LICENSE.
