Domestic violence is a very complex issue based on the nature of the established relationship between the parties involved. It is not a random act of violence committed by a stranger. Simply put, it is abuse, physical or non-physical, that is committed by a person with whom some form of relationship has been formed.

The evidence is clear: Domestic Violence is a serious problem in our society today. Victims of abuse come from all walks of life, and nationwide research has demonstrated that the violence knows no boundaries, whether they be socio-economic, racial, or gender. Unfortunately, many victims of Domestic Violence are reluctant to come forward and seek help. As a result, the abuse can leave the victim in both a physically and psychologically harmful environment for far too long - often months or even years.

In an effort to thwart this growing epidemic on a local level, and to provide the Community with education, legal remedies, and confidential referral assistance, in 1996 the Belmont Police created the Domestic Violence Unit.

The Unit, under the direction of the Chief, and headed up by Sgt. William Watkins, consists of six officers. These officers have received extensive training in Domestic violence intervention, and have taken multiple classes on dealing with this sensitive topic.
