Drug Abuse Prevention Education (D.A.R.E.) is a substance abuse prevention program offered to 5th grade students at the Chenery Middle School.D.A.R.E. is designed to help students develop skills to resist pressure to experiment with drugs, alcohol and tobacco. One technique used to achieve this goal is by raising the students self-esteem and encouraging them to make good decisions by evaluating the possible consequences. Other subjects include assertiveness, stress, reducing violence and evaluating risks.D.A.R.E. class meets approximately once a week for 50 minutes and is taught by a uniformed Police Officer. The officer serves as role model for the students who at a very impressionable age. By relating to the students in a role other than law enforcement, officers develop a rapport which promotes positive attitudes toward police and greater respect for the law.Presently we have one D.A.R.E Police Officer, Officer Horan. Any questions or input about the program can be directed to him at the Belmont Police Station 617-993-2461.
