Preventing Child Abduction and Missing Children

We have seen a recent increase in attempted child abductions in the country and in our community of Boston. Because of this horrific crime the Belmont Police Department has created a special web page to help educate parents, children, and the community on ways to prevent this awful crime in our communities. It should be noted that if you ever become suspicious about a person we urge you to call the police as soon as possible by dialing 911. The most comprehensive web site for missing and exploited children is www.missingkids.com. The site is an excellent source but it should be noted for local cases you can speak with our detectives or juvenile officers with total confidentiality. If you have any questions you can call the station at 617-484-1212. If you prefer we can have an officer come to your location and answer any of your questions.

DNA Kits

The Belmont Police Department held its Child Safety Day on June 15, 2002.
If you missed this event and wish to have identification records made for
your child, please click on www.mychip.org for information on child
identification events that are coming up in the area. Most of these events
are open to any member of the public. The Masonic Child Identification Program (CHIP) provides parents with five methods for finding and identifying their children. The Toothprint?, made by dental personnel, provides a dental record. The dental wafer the child bites into to make the impression preserves a DNA sample. The Toothprint? wafer, sealed in a zippered plastic bag, contains enough scent for a trained search dog to identify and track the child. CHIP also records a short videotape of the child answering questions. Fingerprints of the children may also be taken. Parents retain all of the materials for safekeeping and the police department does not keep copies on file. The Massachusetts Freemasons, the Massachusetts Dental Society, and the Massachusetts Crime Prevention Officers Association sponsor CHIP.
